I witnessed pure joy today. Pure joy comes when you have moved into a new home, welcomed a beautiful new baby into your life, your oldest child has recently turned five and loves his new sister and your two year old is running around like a bulldozer as he repeatedly builds fort after fort with the cushions from the couch.
Looking back just three short months ago, the Kinnaird Family had been living at Riley Hospital for Children for eleven straight months. They were closing in on a year in the hospital, waiting and praying for a heart to become available for their two year old son, Caleb. Caleb had been born with a congenital heart defect and by the age of two the only option left was a transplant. And so they waited. When I photographed Caleb and his family at the hospital, his energy was so low and he was so lethargic that we photographed everyone within ten feet of his hospital room. It was so exhausting for him. At the end of September the most precious gift became available and Caleb had a new heart.
So a new home in March, a new heart in September and a new sister in October. I joked with Caleb’s mom, Katie, that she must have a perfect score on the stress checklist. They seemed to have hit most issues people encounter in a lifetime, all in one year. But I know their secret…..Daniel and Katie love their faith, live their faith and share their faith readily. They have such a positive outlook on life and it exudes from both of them. You can’t help but notice the joy that surrounds them.
The difference between the Caleb that I spent a few hours with this summer, and the Caleb I witnessed this morning, it’s like night and day. I feel honored and privileged to have spent a few hours with them. Watching Caleb and his brother Jonah this morning reminded me of my own boys at that age and how the energy level is just OVER THE TOP! I loved every minute of it. Throw in one gorgeous little sister and I was in Heaven:-)
So it looks like the Kinnairds will have a very blessed Christmas.
